Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan urges people to stop marrying off their daughters below 18 years of age. He is part of public service campaign against early girl marriage.

“Don’t get your daughter married off early. She could be faced with violence and she could be raped, she could be sexually violated,” says the actor.

The 40 second public service announcement, will be aired on television and other social media in the coming months.

The ‘Nation Against Early Marriage’ (Desh Viruddh Bal Vivah) campaign has been initiated by human rights organisation where fathers and men are advised. This is to raise awareness in the country about marrying off girls before they turn 18 years old.

Promoters of the campaign want to convey a change in the outlook among the rural folk, especially, men, husbands, fathers and to-be husbands and male elders who are responsible to make the decisions around early marriages.

Sonali Khan, Vice-President of Breakthrough, India stated that child marriage and violence are linked to each other and they wanted to pin point the social issue and not club it with other women’s issues like child mortality or malnutrition. This campaign is basically aimed at bringing men and dads to understand the gravity of the problem.
