The first trailer for the upcoming dark comedy action-thriller Arizona is out. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Jonathan Watson, who was an executive producer and second unit director on the HBO series Vice Principals. The film is based against the backdrop of the housing crisis in 2009. Rosemarie DeWitt plays a real estate agent and single mom who gets kidnapped by a displeased client (Danny McBride), who is upset that he’s unable to sell his house. As the situations progresses from bad to worse, the situation gets violent, a lot more unstable, and a little out of hand.
Arizona is a dark film, but McBride is able to deliver a really entertaining performance in the vein of a comedic Travis Bickle. He correctly tracks an arc that being silly and ends as completely terrifying, and Luke Del Tredici’s (30 Rock) script aptly uses the issues related to the housing crisis as a backdrop for this kidnapping story, which creates a lot of tension as the story gets darker and darker. Although it’s a crazy, fun, but a scary ride.
Arizona also stars Luke Wilson, Elizabeth Gillies, Kaitlin Olson, and David Alan Grier. Arizona will be released in theaters and on VOD and Digital HD on August 24th.
