Local rowdy Shiva is all out to fight everyone, he meets demure Aastha, whose family has just moved into the chawl he resides in. The duo are attracted with each other but are from completely different backgrounds. Is there any scope for their romance to bloom?

Malaal is based in the Mumbai of the late 90’s and we see twenty two-year-old Shiva (Meezaan Jaffery) is the local ‘tapori’ avatar. He is rustic and temperamental and the quintessential bad boy who indulges in getting into street fights, drinking and gambling. His life is set within the confines of his chawl and doesn’t go beyond brawls at home or on the street till he stumbles upon Aastha Tripathi (Sharmin Segal). The Tripathi family who have newly moved to this modest living space after they faced financial troubles. Their interactions are not friendly and soon Shiva finds himself falling in love with her. But while he is open and upfront about his emotions, Aastha has her reservations. She is pursuing a degree in CA and is already engaged to the son of a wealthy family friend. Shiva has no interest in a career and that bothers her. Her parents had already decided the future of their their daughter and want her to stay away from Shiva. But soon Aastha too falls for him.

Malaal has many romantic and intense moments, this love story has the grandeur in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali production. The film is good with the ambience created by director Mangesh Hadawale who has captured the bustle and flavor of a Mumbai chawl. The festival scenes add to the charm and vibrant setting. Malaal’s vibrant soundtrack is peppy with romantic number ‘Naad Khula’ and the melancholic title track, ‘Ek Malaal’. Malaal is the remake of the 2004 Tamil film, 7G Rainbow Colony.

Meezaan makes an impressive and striking debut with his screen presence and keeps the audience entertained. Sharmin Segal is pleasant and innocent in her role. This onscreen couple share instant chemistry which makes them great together.

Malaal is an engaging love story.
