The film is pulsating with a lot of energy. Every frame, every dialogue spoken by every character hold value. Ranveer is the character, this film is the entire team, all their effort is visible.

This story is beyond ‘follow your dreams’ saga, has a higher level of deliverance.

Murad (Ranveer Singh) is an ordinary guy growing up in slums, facing usual issues in life. His friends steal cars to earn some extra money. Murad’s girlfriend Safina (Alia Bhatt) is sure of what she wants from her life. She wants to become a doctor and she loves Murad. She doesn’t hesitate to go to any extent in favour for Murad. Whereas, Murad is struggling and trying to figure out what to do with his life. He works towards writing but in it turns into a rap, a route he never thought of walking on. He gets some support by a famous MC Sher (Siddhant Chaturvedi) and Sky (Kalki Koechlin), Murad gives his best to explore territories which were not in his vision. He his abusive and un-supportive father (Vijay Raaz) causes a lot of issues in his journey of life.

Gully Boy consists of a similar plot that viewers have seen many times in Bollywood. He is a black sheep trying his talents to aspire but faces restrictions from the family, the society. The film is special film and has its execution and very thoughtful cinematography. The movie is filled with lots of subtext and those who get them all will connect with the film on another level. Kalki Koechlin’s name Sky is a metaphor in itself about how she’s a sky for Murad – very close yet so far. Zoya teams up with Reema Kagti for the screenplay and has scenes that is extensively written keeping the details thanks to them. Jay Oza’s camera work is convincing. Cinematography is the vest best with Gully Boy.

Gully Boy has Ranveer Singh as Murad battling with his survival in life is not a macho hero, he’s from the streets. Ranveer breaks shackles and sets the new record. Ranveer is clearly on an all new level on discovering his talent. Alia Bhatt acts well and as Safina she is convincing portraying Safina. Kalki Koechlin plays a small yet substantial role as Sky. Along with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt’s path-breaking performances, MC Sher aka Siddhant Chaturvedi has done a great job. He is the master of his act. Vijay Raaz as Ranveer’s father gets a film that’s equal as his talent. Right from Kaalakaandi to Stree, he seems wasted in 2018 (only Patakha was an exception). This role was tailor-made role for Raaz and he gives his best. Vijay Varma plays Ranveer Singh’s drug addict friend gives a layered performance. He is humane and easy to connect. Amruta Subash, the actress playing Ranveer Singh’s mother is great at emotional sequences. She leaves a mark with her role. Sheeba Chaddha and the actor playing Alia’s father are very good.

Gully Boy has rap songs that work in favour of the film as none seem forced. Doori, Meri Gully Mein and Apna Time Aayega being the very best of the lot.

Gully Boy is an outstanding film! Watch the movie and experience it.

Gully Boy releases on 14 February 2019.
