Khandaani Shafakhana is a comedy about a woman who inherits a sex clinic.
The story begins with a commercial in which we see Hakim Tarachand aka Mamaji (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) sharing about venereal diseases through a television advertisement. It moves forwards 20 years and we see Tarachand’s niece Baby Bedi (Sonakshi Sinha) living with her mom and brother away from her uncle. Mamaji, who was running a sex clinic, passes away and leaves all the responsibility on Baby. Baby is in a tight spot as she has to repay a loan, she agrees to run the clinic but according to the will if she wants to sell it she’ll have to run it for at least six months. While in process, she meets different kind of people through which she realises the importance of the business. Baby does everything to fit in and spread a positive word-of-mouth about it but is disregarded by the orthodox society. What happens next is the film all about.
Khandaani Shafakhana is based on Gautam Mehra’s story that has a good intent. There is a lot of drama built around the film. We do live in a society that is judgmental and the story starts highlighting them and that becomes the issue. With people calling penis as human’s organ, sperm as wiggle, the laughter element is there along with a courtroom sequence in the film too. The film does get carried away under the burden of a serious topic. Rishi Punjabi’s camera captures the vintage-filled bits of Punjab. The clinic’s set-design is warm and has a delightful view.
Khandaani Shafakhana’s star performance is by Sonakshi Sinha, she gives a lot to the character Baby and nails even the emotional scenes. Sonakshi is confident with her performance. Annu Kapoor is good but seems clueless of what he’s performing to Kulbhushan Kharbanda who seems to be an emotional wreck throughout. Varun Sharma has been given a small role; his supporting performance could have been better for comic relief. Badshah is superb! He looks great in his blingy attire and acts as well as he’s in his real life. He is seen in a cameo role and could’ve been done well. Debutant Priyansh Jora is wonderful in the little screen-space.
Khandaani Shafakhana has Badshah’s introductory song Saans To Le Le is an addition but does not adds any value to the narrative. Tochi Raina’s Udd Jaa is a great one in the film. Koka features in the end. Abhishek Nailwal’s background score works well with few scenes and drops with others.
Khandaani Shafakhana is presented with good intent.
Khandaani Shafakhana releases on 02nd August, 2019.
