Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s love letter from Kashmir Shikara is an emotional film. Vidhu Vinod Chopra narrates the story with a lot of passion and pain.

The makers, performances are excellent and the film turns into an art cinema and a commercial love story.

Travelling through a narrow lane of Jammu, we see a person writing a letter on the typewriter to the POTUS (President of the United States). This is the 1665th letter Shiv Kumar Dhar (Aadil Khan) is posting to the POTUS as he plans to inform how he’s been a refugee in his own country for the last 28 years. In the flashback, we get to see Shiv meeting Shanti (Sadia) and marrying her. In the middle of tensions between Kashmiri Pandits and Kashmiri Muslims, a lot of Pandits get a forced to exit from their own houses. What we now call as the tragic ‘Exodus Day’ Shiv and Shanti were one of those who were homeless overnight. They stay at a refugee camp in Jammu as Shiv gets a reply from the POTUS to his 1665th letter and what happens next is what the story is about.

The beauty of the film can be seen in its exterior. Rangarajan Ramabadran (Cinematographer, Chumbak fame) places the drone for shots to capture the aerial shots of Kashmir. These shots also used as the metaphors which start with a breathtaking Green valley and proceeds with showing all the destruction with smoke coming from the explosions. Vidhu Vinod Chopra was portraying a love story along with a story about Kashmiri Pandits. He combines both and that’s Shikara. The characters’ struggle and tension created in sequences is tough for lovers. Shikara stars Aadil Khan with his charm in his genuine expressions, the actor shares the pain and his act instantly connects the audience. His act was mature with his first film. Sadia Khan is like a breath of fresh air, she lights up the screen with her smile. She plays the role with total control of the scene and does not let the scene falter. Both Aadil and Sadia are one of the most exceptional debutants from Bollywood over the years. The actor playing Lateef, Shiv’s friend character gets the audience twined in emotions.

Shikara by Vidhu Vinod Chopra is clearly a film made with passion. Truly a cinematic creation as good as a classic. The musical piece in the film is a poem written by Irshad Kamil and narrated by Aadil Khan – Ae Wadi Shehzadi. That’s Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s love letter to Kashmir. Shradha Mishra in Mar Jaayein Hum is great.

Shikara is packed with wonderful performances and focuses on the pain in a ‘love story’.

Shikara releases on 07th February, 2020.
