Bulbbul (Netflix) starring Tripti Dimri is a winner of Anushka Sharma produced films. The movie has the potential to be a web series. Tripti Dimri  is seen gets a platform to showcase her brilliant talent.

Women power is the main thing in the film. This woman manages to turn a witch for the society to take her seriously!

The film is written by Anvita Dutt, Netflix’s Bulbbul is co-produced by Anushka Sharma and Karnesh Ssharma. The film reminds us of the time when Kolkata was Calcutta and the fables of witches existed and were dreaded. Anushka Sharma has an audience the film is a good watch!

Bulbbul asks her mother why do women have to wear a ‘bichia’ (toe ring)? To which the mother says, “so that they stay in control”. That sets the premise of the storyline. She is named Bulbbul (the bird) who seeks freedom but is handed over in control of men who see her as an object. Bulbbul is unaware and doesn’t even know whom she is married to at that tender age.

Writer Anvita Dutt gives a neutral feel without being feminine, nor masculine. Bulbbul is a young woman who is unaware about her destiny. She is married to a ‘Thakur’ (who is easily triple her age) her heart goes for his youngest brother. Bulbbul is played by Tripti Dimri who is attracted to Satya played by Avinash Tiwary. Satya has no clue about it and is also infatuated but doesn’t realise the reality. Anvita writes Bulbbul and turns into a might Milady of a palace is unapologetic throughout. She was not asked what she wanted, but when it’s time she looks for it and gets it. The writer places Bulbbul in a world which sees women as house makers, or an object to have s*x with. She introduces a ‘Chudail’ (witch), who is also called ‘Devi’ (goddess). She is the only woman who brings fear amid these men. Bulbbul had the potential to be a 5 part mini-series.

Tripti Dimri is the star of the film. An an actress she shows a range of emotions within the short time. Avinash Tiwary offers an old-world feel and charm. The actor is impressive in what he does. Rahul Bose is good and is getting a lot better with age. Paoli Dham and Parambrata Chattopadhyay get to showcase their talents. Anvita Dutt is a good writer and her direction is good.

Great work by costume designer Veera Kapur, production designer Meenal Agarwal, cinematographer Siddharth Diwan together make a universe that seem believable and authentic. Tripti Dimri’s makeup and the raw look of the surrounding bring out the classic movie-watching experience.

Bulbbul starring Tripti Dimri is a good watch.
