The Relationship Manager is a short film and seems an alternate bid on Anubhav Sinha and Taapsee Pannu starrer Thappad.

The upcoming film is just about 18 minutes, The Relationship Manager gives a hard hitting punch in an emotional way. The Relationship Manager is written and directed by Falguni Thakore – who has been a costume designer for various Neeraj Pandey films. Starring Annup Sonii as Vinay – a Relationship Manager for a bank, Divya Dutta as Kavita – Vinay’s client, Juuhi Babbar Soni as Riya – Vijay’s wife.

The story revolves around a Relationship Manager starting the long lockdown with the usual morning chores. Vinay starts calling his clients and finds an unavoidable thing during one such call. He comes to believe that one of his clients Kavita Arora (Divya Dutt) is suffering from domestic abuse. He gives her a call and shares a personal anecdote on domestic abuse. What happens to both of these characters, is what the film is all about.

The Relationship Manager says a lot in such a short time and conveys a powerful message without getting too dark. Falguni Thakore divides the film into two parts – ‘before the call’ and ‘after the call’. During the call, Falguni showcases us to the world of Vinay. The caring husband he is, the considerate kind of employee he is and the helpful kind of person he is. She gives makes us the comfort at his home expects us to sit beside him while he makes his calls. Before Kavita, Vinay speaks to one of his other clients played by Anupam Kher. A sweet little cameo in which Anupam Ji slams China apart from the other things. Vinay’s call with Kavita has the main crux of the film. This short-film is an extension stating if Tapsee Pannu’s Amrita would’ve continued to stay with Vikram with domestic abuse? Divya Gupta’s Kavita is an answer to that.

The Relationship Manager is well directed, engaging film helmed with care and is brilliantly performed by the actors. Just because the characters are minimalistically written, none of the actors go over-the-board to achieve anything out-of-the-box.

The entire crux of the film is the call and both Annup Sonii and Divya Dutta nail their expressions. Keeping it interesting with powerful dialogues, Annup and Divya make sure to cast an impression with their presence. DOP Arvind Singh with camera offers angles and zooming that help in building the tension around the entire story. Praveen Kathikuloth’s editing offers a magical ingredient. Keeping the script tight, there’s not a single unwanted second in the movie that needed to be edited. Sanjoy Chowdhury’s background score elevates the watching experience. He masterly syncs in his melancholic violin’s tune with the scenes.

The Relationship Manager is a hard-hitting film with engrossing commentary on domestic abuse and suicide. A film that is freely available to stream on YouTube. Shoutout to Large Short Films for backing up such content and making films like these possible.
