Ralph Fiennes also stars in Netflix‘s adaptation of John Preston’s book.

Carey Mulligan and Ralph Fiennes are a pair of Oscar nominees mining quality drama in the first trailer for Netflix’s historical feature The Dig.

The film is based on John Preston’s book of the same name, the movie is directed by The Daughter helmer Simon Stone. The Dig follows Mulligan as a well to do widow who, during WWII-era Britain, enlists an amateur archaeologist to explore her property for hidden treasures.

Soon after, the ancient burial mounds on her rural estate begin to yield historic finds, causing a media storm and prompting her community to reckon with its past while pondering the country’s uncertain future in a time of global conflict.

The Dig was also adapted by Harlots and Jane Eyre writer Moira Buffini, with Lily James, Johnny Flynn, Ben Chaplin, Ken Stott, Archie Barnes, and Monica Dolan rounding out the supporting cast. Oscar-nominated production designer Maria Djurkovic (The Imitation Game) also worked on the film alongside 127 Hours’ Academy Award-nominated editor Jon Harris.

Mulligan can next be seen in the upcoming awards hopeful Promising Young Woman, which opens in December.

Discover The Dig in select theaters on January 15, followed by the film’s January 29 Netflix premiere.
