AK vs AK starring Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap is an experimental film in Bollywood! This is one of the most successful experiments done with filmmaking in the history of World cinema.

AK vs AK is a film on Netflix’ that has nothing ‘regular’ about it. Here, everything is presented with a surprise package, even Anil Kapoor shows a new look. The film starts with a talk show with scripted questions with blunt and in the face answers by filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and actor Anil Kapoor. They roast each other over who’s a bigger AK, Kashyap ends up splashing water on Kapoor’s face. This then leads to Kashyap executing a plan of kidnapping Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam, in exchange for humiliating him and making him work in his art film.

The plan is shooting Anil Kapoor as he’s on this quest of finding Sonam and making a film of that. The rules are stated by Anurag states are: No Police, the camera will always be rolling and always takes the calls on speakers because “audience ko monologue samajta nahi hai.” Anil’s star in him doesn’t let him believe what Anurag is saying, but the actor in him overpowers that doing everything he can to save his daughter.

AK vs AK is streaming on Netflix from Dec 24. Avinash Sampath’s script is brash from scene 1. The concept of combining real into the reel, is done well and the team has achieved a cinematic success. Working both the leading characters around the celebs they are in life – the idea  has the power to change Sampath’s life. The fact of involving real people in the lines deserves a lot more credit than writing lines around fictional characters. The story is skill-fully worded and moves as the ‘camera’ goes to the third leading character of the film. Swapnil Sonawane’s cinematography (additional cinematography by Yogita Bihani) has smooth camera work. Giving an authentic feel, it moves as the characters are moving, the characters bow down under a dining table when asked to be closed down proving to be a thrilling journey.

Anil Kapoor gives an effortless performance, it is a visual treat. He’s busy acting the entire process of ‘not acting’, and that’s a huge reason of how he builds the anticipation of what is he doing to do next. He is about to captivate with his performance, constantly reminding of how ‘Jhakaas’ he is. This is a tailor-made film that is produced by Anurag Kashyap. The combinations with the entire scrip fits this director as Anurag’s role in the movie. The fun he has while portraying the character of a ‘controversial director’ is unparalleled to anything he has ever done before. In a specific scene, he starts calling Anil Kapoor as ‘papa’ with the movie’s quirky dialogues. Yogita Bihani is fantastic and gives a remarkable performance in her short cameo as the camerawoman. Boney Kapoor adds the surprise element with his cameo. Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor goes over-the-board with his acting skills, presenting an all new angle to the script.

AK vs AK is one of the best experiments done with filmmaking in the history of World cinema. The novel concept is about the things team has managed to pitch in to create this one film!

AK vs AK releases on 24th December, 2020.
