Previously titled ‘Ironbark,’ the upcoming movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch as real-life amateur spy Greville Wynne.

Benedict Cumberbatch is presenting yet another true story of British history to the cinemas. He will be seen starring in The Courier, which is set in the Cold War era. The upcoming film’s trailer has been released and promises to be a compelling thriller. The film is directed by Dominic Cooke, The Courier was earlier titled Ironbark, when was played at Sundance in 2020.

The Courier is based on the real story of British businessman Greville Wynne, who was recruited by British and US intelligence agencies MI-6 and the CIA respectively to form a partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky played by Merab Ninidze. Greville was tole to smuggle secrets out of the Soviet Union, which included the intelligence required to defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The official synopsis of The Courier reads, “THE COURIER is a true-life spy thriller, the story of an unassuming British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch) recruited into one of the greatest international conflicts in history. At the behest of the UK’s MI-6 and a CIA operative (Rachel Brosnahan), he forms a covert, dangerous partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) in an effort to provide crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.”

There is a long wait for the next James Bond movie, but a more realistic kind of spy story is on the way soon. The Courier stars Benedict Cumberbatch as real-life British spy Greville Wynne, whose business in Eastern Europe allowed him to act as a go-between for Western intelligence and Soviet spies at the height of the Cold War.

Cumberbatch has seen playing the role of a Cold War British intelligence agent in 2011’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Although his character was at home in author John Le Carre’s world of espionage, Wynne is easily impressed by everything. “I can’t believe I’m actually having lunch with spies,” he tells a CIA operative (Rachel Brosnahan) in the new trailer. He’ll have to get used to it quickly if he’s going to have any hope of helping defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The Courier premiered at Sundance Film Festival last year under the name Ironbark. Now, with a new title, it’s finally making its way to theaters.

The Courier will be released in theaters on March 19. Watch the trailer above.
