Mission Mangal offers spell-binding sequences about a mission that should be known to every Indian. The subject is presented in an entertaining way.
The film is based on the ‘Mars Orbiter Mission’ or Mangalyaan, the story begins with Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar) who gets transferred to Mars’ department. There is no-one in this department because they think achieving Mars is not possible, hence it’s an isolated room filled with dust. Tara joins Rakesh for Mission Mars as she feels responsible for the failure of last mission.
Head of all the flagship missions appointment is changed to Rupert Desai (Dalip Tahil), an ex-NASA scientist, questioning everything done by Rakesh. Somehow, Tara is able to convinces ISRO’S director to back Rakesh for Mar’s mission, and they build a group of underdogs. Although it is known that the mission was a success, but the remaining story is about these underdogs who achieve the impossible.
Mission Mangal has Akshay Kumar starring as Rakesh Dhawan, the actor is impressive. He does his bit and underplays the character on the instructions by R. Balki. Vidya Balan is brilliant and natural. She is charming and her presence is great with her expressive act making the film delightful to watch. Sonakshi Sinha has her character written well. She is able to perform with a sense of comfort, which makes the audience bond with her. Taapsee Pannu has a small part to play in the film. Nithya Menen and Sharman Joshi are also a part of the mission. H. G. Dattatreya adds to the entertainment level of the script. Kirti Kulhari also has only a small part and less contribution to make to the script.
Mission Mangal is directed by Jagan Shakti. Right from the production design to cinematography, the film is appealing. But the film is weak at the story level. Amit Trivedi has composed two songs for Mission Mangal, Dil Mein Mars Hai and Shaabashiyaan are both good. Even the background score of the film blends well in with the situations in the film.
Mission Mangal depicts a mission showcasing an achievement with a very predictable story-line.
Mission Mangal releases on 15th August, 2019.
